About this work
Hourglass Girl is the first limited edition screenprint ever created by Adam Handler, published exclusively by Trium | Monza.
The work was conceived to translate onto paper one of the most recognizable visual languages in international contemporary painting: figures suspended between memory, childhood and imagination, shaped through a direct, essential and instantly identifiable line.
The screenprint is produced in 16 colours on Arches 365 gsm paper, through a fully artisanal process designed to preserve depth, chromatic intensity and a strong sense of surface presence.
Released in an edition of only 25 works worldwide, each print is signed and numbered by hand by the artist.
As Adam Handler states:
“It’s a simple work, but being simple is difficult.”

Hourglass Girl is part of the Girls series, a body of work that Adam Handler has been developing for over fifteen years.
The work is particularly rooted in the memory of a trip to the Outer Banks in North Carolina: a narrow chain of islands defined by a unique natural landscape, inhabited by the famous ghost crabs and wild horses that roam along the shoreline.
Alongside this almost idyllic setting, the artist recalls being struck by a less reassuring, yet equally fascinating presence: the island’s hidden wildlife, from insects and arachnids to an encounter with a black widow spider.
Rather than frightening him, the spider impressed him with its beauty: its deep black body, marked by the red hourglass shape on its underside. From that image came the colour composition of Hourglass Girl’s hair, as well as the title of the work itself.
“It’s simple work, and is hard to be simple.”
Adam Handler
Adam Handler, born in 1986, is a New York-based contemporary artist known for his distinctive approach to painting and sculpture.
After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design, Handler began exploring the relationship between space, form and visual narrative, developing a highly recognizable language that brings together abstraction and figurative elements.
His work is rooted in a deeply personal dimension, where memory, emotional experience and intimacy are translated into essential, highly expressive forms. His figures - reduced to primary marks, bold fields of colour and almost childlike contours - appear less as representations than as emotional constructions, capable of conveying a presence that is both immediate and layered.
Handler has presented numerous solo exhibitions internationally, including in New York, Paris, Seoul, Madrid, Shanghai and Singapore, and has been featured in major fairs and exhibition projects across Europe, Asia and the United States. His works are held in important private and public collections.
Through an ever-evolving practice, Adam Handler investigates the tension between simplicity and complexity, presence and memory, developing a body of work that is both immediately accessible and deeply articulated.
