Collection: Sam Francis
Sam Francis (San Mateo, California, 1923 – Santa Monica, California, 1994) was one of the most influential figures of postwar American abstraction and a leading voice in Abstract Expressionism and lyrical abstraction.
Originally trained in medicine, Francis turned to painting in the late 1940s during a prolonged period of recovery, later studying at the University of California, Berkeley. His early work was informed by Action Painting, but he soon developed a highly personal language in which color, space, and light became the core structural elements of his practice.
From the 1950s onward, Francis lived and worked extensively in Europe and Asia, particularly in Paris and Japan—experiences that profoundly shaped his artistic vision. His paintings are distinguished by vibrant chromatic fields often set against expansive areas of white, creating a dynamic tension between emptiness and presence, gesture and contemplation.
Printmaking played a central role in his oeuvre. Francis’s lithographs, etchings, and screenprints are regarded as independent works rather than secondary reproductions, and they were instrumental in establishing his international reputation.
Sam Francis exhibited widely in major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Tate Gallery in London. His works are held in important public and private collections worldwide and remain a cornerstone in the history of modern and contemporary abstraction.
