Luigi Ontani

Luigi Ontani (b. 1943, Vergato) is a leading figure of Italian contemporary art and a singular presence on the international scene. From the mid-1960s, with his “pleonastic objects”, and then from the 1970s in Rome, he has built a body of work in which his own body becomes language: through photography, performance, sculpture and ceramics he transforms himself into characters from mythology, art history and literature, creating his celebrated tableaux vivants, from hand-coloured photographs to ironic, theatrical masquerades. His first trip to India, in 1974, opened a cycle of works inspired by that culture.

He has taken part in several editions of the Venice Biennale (1972, 1984, 1995) and in group exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum in New York (1982) and the Centre Pompidou in Paris (1981). In 2001, MoMA PS1 in New York devoted to him the first US retrospective of his work, followed by major surveys at S.M.A.K. in Ghent and at MAMbo in Bologna (2008).
